The minute Anastasy heard those voices, she forgot all about the bubbles of delicious champagne dancing on her tongue.

She continued to hold Lachlan’s stare as they both tuned into the talk right on the other side of the thin decorative wood. That was the only thing separating them from an international terrorist who’d killed thousands and would stop at nothing.

She listened to the rise and fall of his voice, taking in more than the words. His Nigerian roots had been smoothed over with a layer of culture she hadn’t heard from the man before.

She scooted closer to the partition to make out the lilts in his speech, analyzing it all in her head.

Lachlan’s eyes were shielded enough that she couldn’t tell what he thought—if he really believed it to be the terrorist.

She had her reservations about the possibility. After all, he’d managed to stay alive this long, and it wasn’t due to recklessness. He spent much of his time hiding from the public eye, and especially hiding behind the people he rallied to stand with him.

So why had he come to what was possibly the busiest restaurant in the whole world?

When the discussion quickly turned from banal chitchat to the subject of money, Lachlan cocked a brow at her. The partition had decorative cutouts, and she peeked through one to get a better look at the men.

The banker was most definitely Svenchenko. Wearing a suit that probably cost as much as most people’s monthly wages, with his gray hair slicked back and a gold stud in his ear, he was the epitome of banking royalty.

And seated across from him was…Mashala Abubakar.

As she looked on, Abubakar got up and left the table.

She popped to her feet in a blink to follow him, and Lachlan was already on her heels, a hand at the small of her back.

“He’s not going to the restroom,” Lachlan barely breathed into her ear.

“He’s headed to the elevator.” In a burst of speed, she ran after Abubakar. The man tossed a look over his shoulder, and she twisted to Lachlan with a wide smile to throw the man off.

Abubakar rushed forward like a man on a mission.

Or a man being hunted.

As he hit the elevator, the doors began to close, but Lachlan curled his fingers around one and stepped in after her.

They were alone with Abubakar.

Her heart thumped. Hard. She could feel it in her nostrils all the way down to her toes peeking out of her strappy stilettos.

He didn’t have any bodyguards with him…the lack was too suspicious to ignore.

At her side, Lachlan played it cool, though she felt tension rolling off him that others might not detect. He reached out and twined his fingers with hers, and she squeezed his hand lightly in return.

Were they going to try to stop him? Jump him? In their ears, the Blackout team was making plans and changing them just as fast.

She contemplated the possibilities of capturing the terrorist. Two against one, they’d have a pretty easy fight.
